German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is preparing for a trip to the Middle East focused on intensifying dialogue regarding the ongoing conflict. Ahead of his departure for Israel and the Palestinian territories, Wadephul emphasized Germany’s firm conviction that a negotiated two-state solution remains the only viable pathway towards a lasting resolution.
According to Wadephul, this solution is essential for enabling a future where individuals on both sides of the conflict can live in peace, security and with dignity. While recognizing that the formal recognition of a Palestinian state is likely to occur later in the process, Wadephul stressed that the negotiation process itself must commence without delay. He affirmed Germany’s commitment to this objective, stating that the country will not deviate from the goal.
The Minister reiterated Germany’s continued support for Israel in its efforts to secure the release of hostages, including German citizens and in ensuring the dismantling of Hamas, eliminating their armed capabilities and political influence within the Palestinian territories. Simultaneously, Wadephul underscored the urgent need for Israel to immediately implement comprehensive and sustainable measures addressing the severely critical humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. He indicated that Germany will be compelled to respond to any unilateral actions taken.
