Germany Urges Israel Annexation Restraint

Ahead of a trip to Israel and the West Bank, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has cautioned against potential annexations of Palestinian territories.

Speaking to Politico, Minister Wadephul expressed concern regarding statements from Israeli politicians and recent Knesset decisions, stating that annexation is “not permissible” and “not justified under international law”. He confirmed that Germany holds a “clear opinion” on the matter, which he intends to convey directly in Jerusalem.

Reaffirming Germany’s commitment to a two-state solution and adherence to international law, Wadephul also reiterated the country’s disapproval of illegal settlements in the West Bank. “We have always said that” he stated.

The immediate priority, according to the Minister, remains securing a ceasefire amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Simultaneously, he emphasized the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, noting the “too large” number of casualties and the necessity to alleviate the suffering of the population.

Further emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Wadephul highlighted the continued plight of missing Israeli hostages. “There are still 50 people missing” he said, indicating that approximately 20 are believed to still be alive and that securing their release remains a paramount objective.
