A leading member of the German Bundestag’s European Affairs Committee is advocating for Germany to formally endorse a joint statement from 28 nations calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip. Anton Hofreiter, Chairman of the committee and a representative of the Green Party, voiced his position in interviews with RTL and n-tv.
While acknowledging Germany’s “special responsibility for the security of the State of Israel” Hofreiter emphasized the urgent need to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. “The extent of hunger and the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza must change immediately. Therefore, I believe it is ultimately the right course of action to join the statement” he stated.
Regarding calls for a halt to arms deliveries, Hofreiter cautioned against hasty decisions. He pointed to the sustained pressure and recurrent attacks Israel faces, particularly highlighting the influence of Iran. “We must strive to ensure the safety of people in Gaza and the West Bank, where serious crimes against the Palestinian population are being committed. At the same time, Germany must ensure that Israel cannot be successfully attacked” he said. Hofreiter described this balancing act as a “very difficult dilemma situation” requiring careful consideration of multiple, competing priorities.
