Berlin, Germany – In a move to strengthen its migration policies, the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has announced that the country will be drawing inspiration from Denmark’s approach. The Chancellor made the statement following a meeting with Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, at the Chancellery.
Denmark has been a model for Germany in the field of migration policy, according to Merz, who praised the country’s recent achievements. The Chancellor revealed that they had sought information from members of the Danish cabinet and Frederiksen herself on the steps taken by the neighboring country.
Germany and Denmark will be working together to establish new and stricter asylum rules in the European Union, with the aim of implementing them quickly and, if necessary, making further improvements. The Chancellor also discussed the Return Directive with Frederiksen, emphasizing the need for it to be brought into effect in a short period of time. If necessary, the necessary changes to the legal foundations will be made, Merz added.
Frederiksen echoed Merz’s sentiments, stating that both Germany and Denmark have expressed their concerns for years. She is looking forward to the collaboration with the new German Chancellor and believes that new solutions are needed to reduce the influx of people into Europe and effectively repatriate those who do not have a right to stay in the country.
The Danish Prime Minister, a Social Democrat since 2019, is known for her hardline stance on migration policies. Frederiksen emphasized the need to preserve social cohesion in society, stating that it is not possible to accept everyone who wants to come to Europe.
