Germany Silent on Intel Billions

The German government is adopting a cautious stance regarding the future allocation of the ten billion euros initially earmarked for the now-abandoned Intel fabrication plant in Magdeburg.

Responding to inquiries from the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Monday in Berlin, a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy indicated that no funds from the project have been disbursed to date. Intel had previously announced a two-year postponement of the project as early as 2024. Consequently, the 2025 budget did not include provisions specifically for these funds.

Regarding the 2026 budget, the spokesperson stated that internal governmental consultations are ongoing and refrained from providing further details.

While acknowledging that Intel’s decision wasn’t entirely unexpected, officials expressed regret over the project’s suspension and its impact on the region. The government maintains a firm commitment to Germany remaining a key location for the semiconductor industry and intends to continue expanding the broader semiconductor ecosystem.
