Germany Sees No Progress From Putin On Ukraine Peace

Berlin – The German government currently observes no indications of movement towards a peaceful resolution from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

Speaking in Berlin on Wednesday, Deputy Government Spokesperson Steffen Meyer stated that significant efforts have been undertaken by both U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders “to genuinely advance steps towards peace”. Meyer emphasized that Putin is, as yet, not demonstrating comparable progress.

“President Putin must now deliver. He must demonstrate a serious interest in bringing the conflict to an end” Meyer said, adding that the government is focused on ensuring the success of this process for both Ukraine and European security. Statements made by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz following the recent summit in Washington should be understood in this context.

Regarding a potential meeting between President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the government spokesperson indicated that no consideration has been given to hosting such a bilateral summit within Germany. However, he stressed the importance of the meeting taking place. “We believe it is a logical next step, given recent developments, to carry this process forward” Meyer concluded.
