Germany Seeks Taliban Cooperation on Deportations

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is planning direct discussions with Syria and Afghanistan regarding the repatriation of foreign criminals.

Speaking to Focus magazine, the Minister stated that returns to these two countries represent significant unresolved challenges. “Currently, there are no agreements in place with either country” he explained. “With Syria, we are in contact regarding a potential agreement for the return of Syrian criminals, although the outcomes of these discussions are still pending.

Regarding Afghanistan, Dobrindt emphasized the need for direct negotiations. “My aim is to establish agreements with Afghanistan to facilitate returns” he said. “However, the continued reliance on third parties to conduct talks with Afghanistan is not a sustainable long-term solution”. The Minister’s initiative signals a proactive approach to addressing the complex issue of foreign criminal repatriation, aiming to establish more direct and stable channels of communication with both nations.
