Germany Seeks Economic Independence From US

The proposed tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump have drawn sharp criticism, prompting renewed calls for Europe to bolster its economic independence. Ines Schwerdtner, leader of the Left party (Die Linke), voiced her concerns in an interview with “Der Spiegel”, urging a strategic response focused on building a robust, socially responsible and environmentally conscious economy.

Trump recently announced plans to impose a 30% tariff increase on goods from the European Union, effective August 1st, communicating the move through his Truth Social platform. Negotiations between Brussels and Washington had reportedly been progressing towards a compromise in recent weeks, a potential outcome now seemingly distant.

Schwerdtner emphasized the need for a calm and measured approach, advocating that the current situation presents an opportunity to forge a more autonomous and assertive trade policy. She stated, “We must no longer allow ourselves to be coerced – neither by Trump nor by Wall Street.

Highlighting the vulnerability created by reliance on inexpensive imports and unrestrained free trade, Schwerdtner called for a strengthening of domestic demand, a transition of European industry aligned with social and environmental principles and the creation of secure, well-compensated jobs. She further stressed the necessity of substantial investment – particularly in climate-neutral production, social infrastructure and a resilient, equitable economy.
