A Ukrainian national suspected of orchestrating the devastating attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines is to be extradited to Germany, following a reversal of an earlier Italian court decision. The move, confirmed by the suspect’s legal counsel and reported by multiple Italian news outlets, marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the sabotage of the critical energy infrastructure.
The initial extradition was stalled by Rome’s Court of Cassation, which had raised concerns regarding procedural irregularities in the previous ruling. However, the Court has now cleared the way for the transfer, potentially accelerating the German authorities’ efforts to unravel the complexities of the operation and identify other individuals involved.
The suspect was apprehended in Rimini on August 21st, acting upon a European arrest warrant. He faces serious charges including joint instigation of an explosion, anti-constitutional sabotage and destruction of essential infrastructure. German prosecutors allege he was part of a group responsible for placing explosives on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in September 2022, in the waters near the Danish island of Bornholm.
According to the prosecution’s case, the group utilized a sailing yacht, reportedly chartered from Rostock, Germany. The procurement of the yacht allegedly involved the use of forged identification documents and intermediaries, masking the true purpose and origin of the vessel.
The subsequent detonations on September 26, 2022, caused extensive damage to both pipelines, triggering a wave of international condemnation and sparking intense geopolitical speculation.
