Germany Presses US Trade Pressure

Franziska Brantner, leader of the Green Party, has urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to adopt a firmer stance in the ongoing trade dispute with the United States.

Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Brantner emphasized the need for the Chancellor to advocate for Europe and champion an assertive European trade policy. She stated that the present moment necessitates a clear demonstration of Europe’s economic sovereignty.

Brantner cautioned against aligning with the policy decisions of the U.S. President, suggesting a focus on reinforcing Europe’s strength to counter perceived pressures. Describing threats of tariffs from President Donald Trump as a “direct attack” on Europe, she underscored the importance of a unified European response. She highlighted the EU’s position as the world’s largest single market, emphasizing its significance as a source of power when acting in concert.

The Green Party leader expressed concern that Chancellor Merz appears to be overlooking the potential harm to German and European businesses and consumers by exerting pressure on the European Commission regarding the influence of large U.S. technology companies. She further called for the CDU to unequivocally support a digital tax and for Minister Reiche to lift her blocking stance against a proposal put forward by her colleague, Weimer. Brantner argued that inaction in this area would continue to strengthen the monopolies of a few giant digital corporations, ultimately hindering European innovation and compromising digital sovereignty.
