Germany Plans Long-Range Drone Development

The German Air Force is seeking to acquire advanced drones capable of striking targets deep within enemy territory, according to a report in “Handelsblatt”. The Luftwaffe has issued requirements to leading German arms manufacturers and start-ups for what are termed “Deep-Strike” drones, signaling a significant shift in the Bundeswehr’s capabilities.

Several consortia are reportedly developing concrete concepts to meet these requirements. Airbus Defence has partnered with the US-based start-up Kratos, while Rheinmetall is collaborating with the drone specialist Anduril. The Munich-based start-up Helsing is also believed to be among the contenders.

While Helsing’s CEO, Gundbert Scherf, declined to confirm details when questioned by “Handelsblatt” he acknowledged the company’s strong focus on air dominance and closing technological gaps through unmanned systems. Helsing has previously built combat drones, but not specifically Deep-Strike capabilities.

The German Ministry of Defence has confirmed exploratory discussions regarding this capability. A spokesperson stated that initial information exchanges are underway, but declined to provide details surrounding internal capability planning. A formal procurement process has not yet been initiated. The move reflects a broader assessment of defense needs and a desire to enhance Germany’s ability to project power and protect its interests.
