Germany Plans Gaza Aid Airlift

The German government, under Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has announced the establishment of an air bridge to deliver food and medicine to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. The initiative, to be implemented in cooperation with Jordan, was revealed on Monday following a session of the German security cabinet.

Chancellor Merz emphasized that the government, in coordination with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, will closely consult with the French and British governments regarding the operation. He described the air bridge as a “small contribution” Germany can make to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

The announcement has drawn criticism from aid organizations who argue that airdrops are not a sustainable solution. Concerns have been raised regarding the insufficient scale and quality of assistance provided from the air, alongside limitations in aircraft capacity. Tragic incidents involving people being injured by falling packages have also been noted.

During the security cabinet meeting, the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza was discussed with “great seriousness and unity”. Chancellor Merz stated that Israel must urgently improve the conditions in Gaza through “immediate, comprehensive and sustainable” measures. He underscored the importance of preventing further displacement of civilians from Gaza.

Regarding a ceasefire, Merz stressed that both the Israeli government and Hamas must take the necessary steps. The release of all hostages and the disarmament of Hamas are considered essential prerequisites. Furthermore, he reiterated Germany’s opposition to any further steps towards the annexation of the West Bank. While maintaining his stance against premature recognition, Chancellor Merz indicated that a Palestinian state’s recognition should be a final outcome of a negotiated settlement.
