The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany is maintaining a cautious stance regarding deportations to Syria, particularly in light of recent clashes within the nation. Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD’s spokesperson for foreign affairs, told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that the situation remains increasingly unstable and is being closely monitored by the German government.
While the coalition agreement includes provisions for deportations to Syria, Ahmetovic emphasized that such actions are contingent on conditions being met. He stated that the stricter regulations concerning the deportation of serious offenders to Syria must be implemented “as soon as the situation allows.
Ahmetovic further stressed the importance of security for all Syrian populations. He called on the new Syrian government, led by President Ahmed al-Scharaa, to protect all residents – regardless of origin or religion – from violence and to initiate an inclusive political process. Stability in Syria is crucial, he argued, not only for its citizens but also for the wider region and for the promotion of peace. Germany and Europe stand ready to offer support toward achieving these goals.
