Germany Norway Forge Stronger Ties

Germany and Norway have announced plans to significantly expand their strategic partnership across a range of crucial sectors. A joint declaration, released on Monday during Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre’s visit to the Chancellery, outlines a commitment to jointly developing necessary capabilities to address future challenges.

The collaborative efforts will focus on areas including peace and security, energy security, as well as research and innovative technologies. A key aspect of the strengthened partnership involves enhancing maritime cooperation within the North Atlantic and North Sea, establishing an integrated operational partnership and prioritizing the improved protection of critical underwater infrastructure.

Furthermore, existing collaboration in the development of space capabilities is to be deepened. To complement the maritime focus, the two nations intend to bolster cooperation on land, with a commitment to supporting each other within their respective regional NATO defence plans.

The declaration states that a new bilateral defence agreement will be driven by the defence ministers, aiming to provide a long-term framework for the German-Norwegian defence partnership and formalize these priorities. This agreement is expected to solidify an increasingly robust and multifaceted security relationship between the two nations.
