Germany Launches Nationwide Pollen Monitoring

The German Meteorological Service (DWD) has initiated a nationwide rollout of fully automated pollen monitors, aiming to significantly improve allergy sufferers’ access to timely and accurate pollen information. The project, announced on Thursday, will see 16 devices installed across the country by 2027.

These advanced monitors will provide forecasts up to six days in advance, enabling individuals with pollen allergies to proactively manage their medication and plan daily activities. Utilizing technology akin to automated microscopes, the devices leverage artificial intelligence to identify a comprehensive range of pollen types. This includes the eight most common allergens, such as hazel, birch and grasses, alongside 26 additional species.

The investment of approximately two million euros is projected to yield a rapid return. The DWD estimates the overall economic burden of pollen allergies to be around four billion euros annually.

Strategic placement of the monitoring devices prioritizes urban areas with high concentrations of allergy sufferers. Eight DWD regional offices and eight major urban areas will be equipped with the new technology. To further expand coverage and data accessibility, the DWD intends to establish collaborative partnerships with other pollen monitoring operators.
