The German government will be represented at the inauguration of the next US President, Donald Trump, on January 20, by the German ambassador in Washington, Andreas Michaelis.
“As is protocolarily usual, the German ambassador in Washington has been officially invited to the inauguration as the representative of Germany” the Foreign Office responded to a query from the “Tagesspiegel” newspaper, as reported by the paper. The German Embassy in Washington confirmed the information to the “Tagesspiegel”.
“The inauguration of a new US President is an important moment” said German Ambassador Michaelis to the “Tagesspiegel”: “On this day, it will be particularly clear to us how important it is to continue a close and good cooperation between the USA and Germany.”
At the inauguration, which will take place in front of the west side of the US Capitol in Washington, Trump will be sworn in as the 47th US President. The 78-year-old Republican is to be inaugurated and deliver his inaugural address. The ceremony marks the end of Joe Biden’s term and the beginning of Trump’s four-year second term. Trump was re-elected as President in November 2024. He previously served as President between 2017 and 2021. He did not attend the inauguration of his successor, Joe Biden, in 2021, as he falsely claimed to have won the 2020 election at the time.
