Disagreement has emerged within German political circles regarding the ongoing situation in Gaza and the appropriateness of arms exports to Israel. Volker Beck, president of the German-Israeli Society, has strongly condemned a recent proposal by former SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich advocating for a halt to weapons deliveries.
Speaking to the “Rhinische Post” Beck characterized Mützenich’s suggestion as “nothing more than anti-Israel sentiment” and criticized the timing, noting the impending expiry of the nuclear agreement with Iran in mid-October.
While acknowledging widespread concern for the lives of civilians in Gaza, Beck asserted that Hamas bears primary responsibility for the humanitarian crisis and food shortages within the territory. He also emphasized Israel’s obligation to contribute to averting a humanitarian disaster, stating that current efforts are insufficient.
The call for a policy shift regarding Israel came in a joint statement released by Mützenich and the parliamentary group’s foreign policy spokesperson, Adis Ahmetovic, reflecting anxieties about the escalating situation and prompting a renewed debate within German political discourse.
