Germany Eyes Tech Growth Not Just Digital Tax

The debate surrounding the implementation of a digital tax continues, with Federal Minister for Digital Affairs, Karsten Wildberger, advocating for a “fair system” while simultaneously stating it is not his “top priority” at present.

Instead, Wildberger emphasized the importance of fostering the growth of German digital companies. In statements to Funke-Zeitungen, the CDU politician expressed confidence in Germany’s potential to catch up to dominant US tech corporations. “There’s always a chance. The critical factor is that if you want to compete, you have to start. Currently, this isn’s happening sufficiently” he stated.

Wildberger underscored Germany’s existing capabilities for nurturing large-scale tech ventures. “We have excellent individuals in Germany – innovative, creative and driven by a clear purpose. I have faith in the younger generation” he commented.

Recognizing the challenges faced by some segments of the population, Wildberger also highlighted a commitment to ensuring inclusivity. Addressing the needs of older individuals who may struggle with digitalization, he emphasized the responsibility to “enable a dignified old age and prevent the digital inclusivity gap from widening”. This includes developing more user-friendly interfaces and providing robust support initiatives. The Minister specifically noted the potential benefits of digitally accessible government services for individuals with limited mobility.
