German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has indicated his intention to maintain border controls, citing a significant decline in asylum applications. In an interview with “Focus” magazine, Dobrindt stated that the current measures are “effective” and will be continued, referring to recent figures as evidence of an “asylum shift.
Official data reveals a sharp reduction in the number of asylum requests submitted in July. A total of 8,293 applications were registered, representing a decrease of approximately 55 percent compared to July 2024 and a decline of roughly 65 percent when compared to July 2023.
However, the statistics also show a slight increase in asylum applications when comparing July to June, rising from 6,860 to 8,293.
Internal border controls are currently scheduled to remain in place until September 15th. To extend these measures beyond this date, Dobrindt is required to formally notify the European Commission in August.
