Concerns have been raised regarding ongoing discussions within the German government concerning potential deportations to Syria. Former Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights, Luise Amtsberg, has cautioned against such deliberations, highlighting the volatile situation currently facing Syrian minority groups.
Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Amtsberg emphasized that speculating on deportations at this time is inappropriate, particularly given the struggles for survival currently experienced by various Syrian communities. She stated that such debates risk disappointing and unsettling the Syrian diaspora.
Amtsberg, now serving as a foreign policy expert for the Green Party parliamentary group, urged Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to intensify efforts to prevent further escalations in Syria. She stressed the need to increase pressure on the Syrian transitional government.
Prioritizing the protection of minority groups and ensuring accountability for atrocities are paramount, Amtsberg argued. She believes that comprehensive investigations into past grievances represent a crucial first step towards reconciliation, which is essential for building an inclusive state. Germany, she suggested, is uniquely positioned to play a significant role in this process.
