Germany Defers Palestinian State Recognition

The German government has stated it will not currently recognize the State of Palestine. Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius conveyed this position to reporters on Friday, responding to a recent announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who indicated France’s intent to recognize the Palestinian state.

Kornelius emphasized that any resolution must be achieved through negotiated means, incorporating Israel’s involvement. He suggested that recognition of a Palestinian state could only be a concluding step within such a framework.

Prioritizing the security of Israel, the German government underscored the necessity of Hamas disarmament and the release of hostages held by the organization. Simultaneously, Kornelius acknowledged the imperative for Israel to improve the living conditions for civilians in the Gaza Strip.
