Germany Debates AfD Ban Urgency

The Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Alexander Schweitzer of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has cautioned against rushing a potential ban of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In an interview with “Welt am Sonntag” Schweitzer stated his support for preparing a legal process to potentially ban the AfD, but emphasized the importance of thorough preparation and cautioned against hasty action. He argued that the party’s current polling figures should not preclude consideration of such measures. “It is crucial to strengthen and protect our democracy” he stated, “and one cannot simply dismiss the possibility because of popularity.

Addressing recent media reports, Schweitzer clarified that members of the AfD will continue to be eligible for employment in the public service of Rhineland-Palatinate. He emphasized that individuals deemed to be threats to the constitution have no place in public service, adding that assessment should be handled on a case-by-case basis. This principle applies to all citizens, including those affiliated with the AfD.

Schweitzer also confirmed that the AfD in Rhineland-Palatinate has been placed on a list of parties and organizations where concerns regarding their adherence to the constitution have been raised. This designation triggers heightened scrutiny of those seeking public service positions within the state.
