Germany Considers Increased Afghan Deportations

Sources indicate the German government is preparing to significantly expand the deportation of Afghan citizens to their home country.

According to reports, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, led by Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), is accelerating preparations for increased deportations. The process is expected to become more streamlined, consistent and occur on a larger scale compared to previous efforts.

A key shift involves a move away from charter flights solely; instead, Afghan citizens will be returned to Afghanistan via scheduled commercial flights.

Government officials are reportedly engaged in discussions with Taliban authorities to establish a formalized deportation mechanism. Meetings between representatives of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Taliban took place in Qatar earlier this month. German representatives are now organizing a delegation to Kabul to continue these negotiations on-site, with Qatar acting as a mediator.

Since the Taliban’s takeover in the summer of 2021, only two deportation flights have been conducted from Germany to Afghanistan. Twenty-eight individuals were deported in autumn 2024, followed by eighty-one Afghan nationals considered to be repeat offenders in July 2025.
