Concerns over asylum policies and migration trends have been voiced by Johannes Winkel, the chairman of the Young Union (JU), the youth wing of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In an interview with “Welt” Winkel called for stricter regulations within the asylum system, while also expressing criticism of the migration policies enacted during the tenure of former Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Winkel argued that asylum procedures ought to be completed before individuals reach their intended destination, stating that allowing assessments to occur within a country effectively dismantles the asylum system and creates an unlimited right of entry. He cited over 250,000 asylum applications in 2024 as an unsustainable figure, emphasizing that asylum is intended for individuals facing persecution, not intended to facilitate large-scale migration. He suggested that even 5,000 asylum cases annually represents a significant number.
Referring to Merkel’s now-famous phrase “Wir schaffen das” Winkel described it as a misguided decision, asserting it attempted to combine “open borders for all with an open welfare state for all”. He argued this approach undermined the foundations of the state and demonstrated naivety, emphasizing the state’s responsibility to protect its own citizens. He added that this commitment cannot be upheld without maintaining control over who enters the country, acknowledging that some citizens may feel Merkel failed in her duty.
The chairman also addressed the recent local election campaign in Cologne, criticizing an agreement amongst parties-with the exception of the Alternative for Germany (AfD)-not to speak negatively about migration. He characterized this consensus as “undemocratic” and a symptom of a dysfunctional discourse, adding that this situation effectively provides electoral support for the AfD.
