Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has voiced a call for reform within the United Nations, specifically advocating for an expansion of the UN Security Council. Addressing the UN General Debate in New York on Saturday, Minister Wadephul emphasized the need for the institution to accurately reflect the current global landscape, noting that after 80 years, a reassessment is necessary.
He stated that the Security Council requires an increase in both permanent and non-permanent seats to better represent existing geopolitical realities. Germany believes that additional permanent positions should be allocated to regions currently underrepresented on the Council, prioritizing Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Minister Wadephul underlined the importance of the UN’s readiness to address pressing global challenges. As part of Germany’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the years 2027/2028, he specifically highlighted the dire humanitarian situations unfolding in Sudan and Gaza. He also reiterated strong condemnation of Russia’s ongoing military aggression against Ukraine.
