Germany Braces for Upheaval Merz Warns

The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz of the CDU, addressed the nation Friday, acknowledging a period of profound change while urging optimism and collective responsibility. Speaking at a commemorative event marking German Unity Day in Saarbrücken, Merz characterized the present as a “critical, perhaps decisive phase” for the country.

He posed fundamental questions concerning Germany’s future: what kind of nation it aspires to be and how to maintain, or rediscover, its internal stability. The Chancellor noted a discernible weakening of the influence traditionally associated with Western values, with alliances of authoritarian regimes challenging the principles of a liberal way of life.

Furthermore, Merz highlighted a transformative era of economic and technological revolution, drawing parallels to the early stages of industrialization. He stated that the global economy is currently undergoing a fundamental reshaping, which necessitates a reconsideration of certain societal commitments and previously held expectations.

Acknowledging the divisive impact of migration, Merz noted that it has contributed to social polarization within Germany. Despite this challenging diagnosis, the Chancellor stressed that this moment should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a threat, an opportunity to be seized together. He emphasized the shared responsibility of all citizens in navigating these shifts and reaffirmed the importance of a nation capable of self-determination, where decisions are not dictated by a select few. “The state is us all” he asserted, reinforcing the principle of collective ownership and engagement in shaping Germany’s future.
