The deployment of a new German Panzerbrigade 45 in Lithuania represents a significant contribution to NATO’s collective defense capabilities, according to the brigade’s commander, Christoph Huber. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Monday, General Huber emphasized the brigade’s commitment to upholding NATO values.
The Panzerbrigade 45, currently under development, is slated to be permanently stationed in Lithuania with approximately 5,000 personnel by the end of 2027, operating at full readiness. Huber characterized the brigade as a “strong German contribution to NATO deterrence and defense capability” reaffirming a dedication to safeguarding NATO freedoms.
The brigade will be equipped with a comprehensive range of military assets, including Leopard 2R8 main battle tanks, Puma S1 armored infantry fighting vehicles and artillery systems. Recognizing the importance of modern reconnaissance capabilities, Huber also highlighted the need for drone systems.
Addressing concerns regarding potential shifts in alliance commitments, particularly regarding statements from U.S. leadership, General Huber expressed confidence in the strength of NATO’s internal solidarity. Regarding hypothetical scenarios involving the Suwalki Corridor – a strategically vital land bridge between Lithuania and Poland – Huber stated that the brigade is preparing for all possibilities, including the task of protecting the corridor. He affirmed a commitment to defending every inch of NATO territory.
