The German government has indicated its willingness to actively support the implementation of the peace proposals recently outlined by US President Donald Trump regarding the Gaza Strip.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, in statements to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, emphasized Germany’s potential contribution to resolving operational challenges associated with the plan. He highlighted the government’s prior commitment to participating in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, a factor he believes could serve as a catalyst for reaching a consensus on the proposed framework.
Minister Wadephul expressed a cautious optimism regarding the possibility of a ceasefire. According to his statements, the US plan for Gaza presents an opportunity to end the ongoing conflict, alleviate suffering and secure the release of hostages. He asserted that Hamas now has a critical opportunity to embrace this initiative.
The German government has reportedly maintained close engagement with the negotiation process through numerous discussions. Wadephul acknowledged that the proposed solution will not be immediately actionable, requiring considerable planning and logistical considerations. He underscored the numerous complex questions that need addressing, including the future governance of the Gaza Strip, security arrangements, restoration of humanitarian aid and organization of reconstruction efforts. He characterized the path forward as a challenging endeavor.
