German Workforce Sees Slight Bounce in November

In November 2024, approximately 46.1 million people with a residence in Germany were employed.

According to preliminary calculations by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of employed people increased by around 24,000 people (0.1%) seasonally adjusted compared to the previous month, as the agency announced on Friday.

In October, employment had risen by 12,000 people. As a result, employment has developed positively again, after the seasonally adjusted declines in June to September 2024, with an average of -19,000 people.

Unadjusted for seasonality, the number of employed people increased by 31,000 people (0.1%) in November 2024 compared to October 2024, which is above the November average of 2022 and 2023 (+20,000 people).

Compared to November 2023, the number of employed people in November 2024 has hardly changed (0.0%, or +10,000 people). Employment remained at the previous year’s level for the third consecutive month, with the change rates in September and October 2024 also being 0.0%.

In November 2024, according to the labor force survey, 1.49 million people were unemployed. This was 138,000 people or 10.1% more than in November 2023. The unemployment rate rose to 3.3% (November 2023: 3.1%).

Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed people in November 2024 was 1.52 million, which is a decrease of 2,000 people (-0.1%) compared to the previous month. The adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.4% compared to the previous month, the statisticians said.
