German States Equip Schools With AI

Across several German states, a new era of educational technology is dawning as artificial intelligence tools are being integrated into classrooms. This academic year sees the introduction of “Telli” a KI software developed by the Federal Media Institute (FWU), in Bremen, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Hessen, Schleswig-Holstein and Thüringen. The system is designed to be accessible to both teachers and students.

This expansion brings the total number of federal states experimenting with AI chatbots in education to twelve. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern spearheaded this initial wave, implementing tools from the provider Fobizz two years ago. Other states including Saxony-Anhalt, Rhineland-Palatinate, Berlin, Bavaria and Saxony are also actively exploring and utilizing AI applications within their schools, with some developing their own solutions such as EmuGPT in Saxony-Anhalt.

The Saarland is preparing for its own implementation but remains in a “phase of exploration” to determine between Fobizz and Telli. Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia currently lag behind, with pilot projects underway but limited to a fraction of their schools. The adoption of these tools represents a significant shift in pedagogical approaches, prompting ongoing evaluation and adaptation within the German education system.
