German State Leader Urges Coalition Unity After Resignation

Rhineland-Palatinate’s Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer, also a Vice-President of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has urged improved cooperation within the governing coalition following the withdrawal of Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf as a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court.

Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Schweitzer stated that “this federal government is destined to succeed” adding his hope that all parties recognize this, particularly Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The SPD politician emphasized the importance of swiftly identifying a new candidate for the court. “The coalition should reach a common solution as quickly as possible – and then find a common majority to support it” he said.

Schweitzer expressed his frustration with the conflict surrounding the judicial appointment. He highlighted the coalition’s positive start and the successful implementation of key initiatives, such as the special fund for infrastructure and questioned the recent impasse. “It is not comprehensible to me that we have run into such a wall regarding a judicial appointment” he stated.

He accused the opposition bloc of failing to honor a prior agreement. According to Schweitzer, Brosius-Gersdorf’s withdrawal – an action taken despite her impeccable legal standing – resolved a problem she did not create and was a consequence of the ongoing campaign against her candidacy.
