Concerns have been raised by the German Police Union (GdP) regarding the commencement of Polish border controls on the frontier with Germany. GdP officials are calling for close coordination and clearly defined protocols between the two nations regarding the return of individuals at the border.
Andreas Roßkopf, Federal Chairman of the GdP for the Federal Police, emphasized the need for a practical and functional process, stating that clear agreements are crucial to determine when and under what circumstances returns are permissible or mandatory. He specifically highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to reciprocal rejections, advocating that German authorities should assume responsibility for individuals returned by Poland, potentially directing them to reception facilities.
GdP officials have expressed apprehension about the announced Polish border controls, which are scheduled to take effect on Monday. The union fears a potential “ping-pong” scenario, where asylum seekers and those requesting protection are repeatedly rejected between the two countries. Roßkopf warned that this could turn vulnerable individuals into “pawns” of political maneuvering and would place a significant burden on the Federal Police, leading to a considerable increase in workload. The GdP insists on sensible and workable agreements to ensure a humane and efficient border management process.
