German Pipeline Chief Seeks Revival of Russian Gas Flow

The head of Infra-Leuna in Saxony-Anhalt, Christof Günther, is calling for the resumption of Russian natural gas deliveries to Germany via pipelines. “It’s also implausible that we import Russian LNG, but the pipelines are shut down” the CEO of the chemical park told the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung.

For instance, the shutdown of the pipeline through Ukraine in December last year “led to a further price surge” the CEO lamented. Over the past 12 months, the gas price has doubled, he complained. “We will soon mark the third anniversary of the war’s start. Now it’s time to reconsider our strategy” he said.

Natural gas, although not sanctioned, has effectively been stopped being imported and the damage is done, Günther said. “But the war continues. More people are dying. Success looks different” he added.

The situation of the chemical industry has further deteriorated in the past year, the CEO lamented. “Germany’s energy prices are not competitive. The energy supply must be expanded so that prices can fall” he concluded.
