German Parliament Sees Historic Low of Women in Office

According to information from the Parliament’s administration, reported by the news portal Politico, the proportion of female members in the German Bundestag is decreasing. In the outgoing parliament, 34.8 percent of the members were women, whereas in the newly elected Bundestag, the figure will be 31.2 percent. The new parliament will comprise 204 female and 426 male members. The Green party has the highest proportion of female representatives, with 61.2 percent, followed by the Left party, with 56.2 percent and the Social Democratic Party, with 41.7 percent. The proportion of female representatives in the CDU and CSU parties has slightly decreased, from 23.5 to 23.1 percent, while the AfD party has the lowest proportion, with 11.8 percent, a decrease from the previous 13.3 percent.

Gregor Gysi, a politician from the Left party, at the age of 30.7 years in the Bundestag, is the oldest member and designated oldest member of the new Bundestag. A total of 230 out of the 630 members are new to the Bundestag, with the AfD party having the most new members, at 92 and the SPD party having the most departures, at 98. A total of 400 members were re-elected, crossing party lines.
