A leading security expert from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has defended the financial costs associated with ongoing border controls conducted by Germany’s Federal Police, responding to recent criticism regarding expenditure. Alexander Throm, the CDU’s interior policy spokesman, asserted that public safety and the prevention of irregular migration should be prioritized, regardless of cost.
In a statement to Rheinische Post, Throm argued that the economic burden of unregulated migration outweighs the expenses related to border security measures. He further emphasized potential societal impacts stemming from irregular migration.
According to data recently released by the German government in response to a parliamentary inquiry by the Left party, border controls implemented across all German land borders in September 2024 have, through the end of June 2025, totaled €80.5 million.
Throm pointed to figures from the Federal Police, detailing increased instances of rejected entries, outstanding arrest warrants, the apprehension of smugglers and the identification of individuals with extremist connections, as evidence that the controls are demonstrably contributing to enhanced security and order. He advocates for the indefinite continuation of these measures.
