German MP Urges Israel to Shift Course Soon

A divergence in opinion has emerged within Germany’s political landscape following a decision by CDU leader Friedrich Merz to implement a partial halt to arms deliveries to Israel. CSU foreign policy spokesperson Stephan Mayer publicly voiced his disagreement with the move following a special session of the parliamentary faction on Sunday, stating he questions whether the decision will achieve its intended objectives. These objectives, Mayer clarified, relate to securing the release of remaining hostages and improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, particularly for children and adolescents.

While acknowledging Merz likely gave the matter careful consideration and noting the decision is presented as preliminary with potential for reversal should humanitarian conditions demonstrably improve, Mayer expressed hope for a swift reassessment. He indicated his concern that a prolonged pause in arms deliveries could negatively impact the bilateral relationship between Germany and Israel.

Several CSU representatives reportedly expressed feeling sidelined during the decision-making process, a sentiment echoed by Mayer. He confirmed that experts within the relevant departments were not consulted on the matter. Regarding whether the CSU leadership had been appropriately informed, Mayer indicated uncertainties, referencing statements made by the group’s parliamentary leader that prompt him to question the extent of their involvement.
