German MP Open to Ukraine Peacekeeping Troops

A leading figure within Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) has indicated a potential openness to the future deployment of German armed forces as part of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, contingent upon robust security guarantees from the United States.

Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD’s spokesperson for foreign policy, stated that while a firm commitment is premature, the possibility should not be dismissed. He emphasized the necessity of credible security assurances from the U.S. as a prerequisite for detailing Germany and the European Union’s contribution. Ahmetovic highlighted that continued arms deliveries and bolstering arms production within Ukraine remain viable options, while a definitive stance regarding ground troops should await further developments. He stressed that the level of U.S. involvement will be a critical factor.

The comments come amidst ongoing discussion regarding Germany’s role in securing a potential future peace in Ukraine. While asserting that a singular decision on European security architecture does not rest with the U.S. President, Ahmetovic urged the German Chancellor to actively utilize opportunities to influence policy in Washington.

However, within the SPD, perspectives diverge. Ralf Stegner, another prominent party member, explicitly opposed the deployment of German troops to secure a potential ceasefire. He argued that Germany should refrain from involvement, citing historical complexities and questioning the practicality of such a deployment. Stegner underscored the necessity of a broad international mandate for any peacekeeping operation and cautioned against prematurely positioning Germany as a key military strategist.

The debate was recently reignited following comments from Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), who acknowledged Germany’s potential “important role” in securing future peace in Ukraine. He also cautioned that a deployment of German troops could potentially strain the Bundeswehr’s resources.
