German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has announced renewed talks with the Hungarian government regarding the detention of Maja T. in Hungary.
Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Wadephul stated that German officials will be visiting Hungary next week to address the situation. The immediate priority, he indicated, will be to secure improvements to the conditions of her detention. “Our efforts in this matter are continuing intensively” Wadephul affirmed.
However, Hungary has consistently maintained its commitment to pursuing its own criminal prosecution. The Minister acknowledged that Maja T. faces “serious allegations” and added that similar charges would likely be brought against her in Germany were the situation reversed.
Maja T., originally from Jena, is accused of assault during protests against right-wing extremism in Hungary. While the German Federal Constitutional Court had previously deemed her extradition to Hungary unlawful, authorities in the state of Saxony did not await that ruling before proceeding.
