German Minister Opens Door for Discussion

A German Minister Signals Willingness to Discuss Reduced Electricity Tax

In a recent interview, Thorsten Frei, the German Minister of the Chancellery, expressed a willingness to consider reducing the electricity tax for all, a proposal that has been a topic of discussion in the country.

Frei, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), emphasized the need to examine the potential sources of funding for such a reduction, suggesting that a reallocation of funds within the federal budget could be a viable option. He also noted that the proposal would need to be consensus-driven within the coalition, implying that it is a feasible path for discussion.

When asked if it would be a good idea for the budget policymakers from the CDU and Social Democratic Party (SPD) to meet before the coalition committee on July 2, Frei responded affirmatively, stating that the budget experts already regularly convene due to the pressing nature of the budget-making process for the parliamentary sector.
