Germany’s Labor Minister Bärbel Bas has defended the federal government’s decision to limit arms deliveries to Israel, emphasizing a responsibility to consider the humanitarian situation in Gaza alongside continued support for Israel’s security. In a recent interview, Bas responded to criticism leveled by opposition leader Friedrich Merz, stating accusations of betraying Israel were unwarranted. She stressed the need for a balanced approach, acknowledging ongoing support for Israel while also recognizing the plight of civilians in Gaza.
Bas also urged improved internal communication within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group regarding this sensitive issue. She suggested a more robust communication strategy would help prevent public disagreements and expressed disappointment that current dynamics appeared to mirror past issues experienced with the previous governing coalition.
The Minister highlighted ongoing friction within the governing coalition concerning the recent process surrounding the selection of judges for the Federal Constitutional Court and the withdrawal of Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf as a proposed candidate. Bas criticized the handling of the matter, stating it had caused damage within her own party and necessitated further clarification.
Addressing questions regarding trust in Jens Spahn, leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Bas acknowledged a strained relationship. She confirmed that trust had been damaged and indicated that a further discussion on the matter would be necessary.
