German High Courts Demand AI-Powered Justice Revolution

In a move to modernize the civil procedure, the presidents of the Higher Regional Courts have expressed their support for a comprehensive overhaul of the system at their 77th annual conference in Weimar. According to a statement released by the Thuringian Higher Regional Court on Wednesday, the focus lies on the digitalization of the justice system and a reform of the Civil Procedure Code.

One of the central topics of discussion was the use of artificial intelligence in court proceedings. The jurists emphasized that while AI can aid in preparation, the final decision must always rest with the judges. They also advocated for the specialization of judges and the strengthening of the chamber principle.

Other resolutions included the strengthening of commercial courts, which will be achieved through legislative and organizational measures. These measures include the expansion of the jurisdiction catalog and the establishment of pools of commercial judges. The presidents further called for increased investments in the personnel and material equipment of the courts.
