A leading German politician has voiced concerns regarding key leadership vacancies within federal agencies responsible for national security and civic education Konstantin von Notz, Deputy Floor Manager of the Green Party parliamentary group, highlighted what he describes as pressing issues facing Germany’s internal security landscape
Von Notz stated that the unfilled positions at the head of critical organizations are occurring at a time when the country is facing external political influence, disinformation campaigns impacting elections and airspace breaches He specifically pointed to the ongoing vacancy at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) – Germany’s domestic intelligence agency – despite the increasing security challenges
The BfV’s presidential post has remained open since its former head announced his candidacy for parliamentary election in November 2024 Simultaneously, the president of the Federal Agency for Civic Education recently retired and the heads of the Federal Audit Office and the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance are approaching retirement age, with no successors yet appointed
Von Notz criticized the current Minister responsible, suggesting insufficient focus on these vital areas, arguing priorities appear to be directed towards border controls with limited demonstrable success Three of the four aforementioned institutions fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry of the Interior
