The criticism of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip is growing in Germany. Israel has the right to protect itself and defend itself, but any military operation must take place under the conditions of humanitarian international law, said the chairwoman of the Greens in the German Bundestag, Katharina Dröge, to the newspapers of the Funke Media Group (Monday editions).
Dröge stated that the new military offensive by the Israeli government in Gaza will further deteriorate the already dramatic humanitarian situation for the civilian population in Gaza. She also called on Hamas to immediately lay down arms, release hostages and cease attacks on Israel.
Furthermore, Dröge emphasized that the suffering of the civilian population in Gaza is immense. She demanded that the German government intensify its efforts to ensure that the Israeli government adheres to humanitarian international law, reaches a ceasefire and immediately lifts the blockade on humanitarian aid deliveries. The German government should uphold the G7 principles, which call for no forced displacement, no occupation, no territorial reduction and no decision on the future of Gaza without the involvement of the Palestinians.
