German Environment Minister Franziska Brantner has defended the intention of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, the Greens, to take over the chair of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, thereby displacing diplomat Helga Schmid.
“By occupying the position, Germany is demonstrating its strong commitment to the United Nations” she told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. “Annalena Baerbock brings outstanding connections and an unwavering passion for international diplomacy. As foreign minister, she has successfully worked day and night to ensure that the international community, in a large majority, has shown solidarity with Ukraine following the Russian invasion war.”
Baerbock can now continue her fight for global climate justice, the strength of international law and a feminist foreign and security policy at a decisive position, thus “following in the footsteps of many other foreign ministers who have made the transition to this position after their term in office” according to Brantner.
