No connection is seen by the German federal government to the upcoming election on February 23 in the attacks in Magdeburg, Aschaffenburg and Munich, a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) stated on Friday in response to a query by the German News Agency.
“We see no connection to the federal election” the spokesperson said. “We have a generally high level of danger” the spokesperson added, explaining that in response, the security authorities are taking strong measures, such as a high police presence at events and heavily frequented locations.
General threat assessments are continuously updated by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). As for the suspected attack in Munich, a report on an update cannot be given at the moment, the ministry’s spokesperson said.
