German manufacturing orders remained stable in June 2025, according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Seasonally and calendar-adjusted new orders in manufacturing were unchanged compared to May. However, year-on-year, the overall order backlog increased by 5.1 percent.
Within the manufacturing sector, trends varied. Orders in the ‘Other Vehicle Construction’ category – encompassing aircraft, ships, trains and military vehicles – saw a 1.9 percent increase compared to the previous month. Conversely, the machinery sector experienced a 0.8 percent decline and the automotive industry saw a decrease of 1.4 percent.
Domestic orders decreased by 0.6 percent in June, while orders from abroad increased by 0.4 percent. Manufacturers of intermediate goods reported a 0.3 percent decrease in their order backlogs. In contrast, the backlog expanded by 0.1 percent for investment goods manufacturers and by 0.6 percent for consumer goods producers.
The duration of the order backlog – indicating the number of months of production covered by existing orders – rose to 7.9 months in June, up from 7.8 months in May. The backlog duration remained stable at 10.7 months for investment goods manufacturers, 4.3 months for intermediate goods manufacturers and 3.6 months for consumer goods manufacturers.
