German Export Industry's Mood Lifted, But Still in the Red

A recent survey by the Ifo-Institute in Munich has indicated a slight improvement in the mood of the German export industry. According to the institute’s data, exporter expectations rose to -5.0 points in February, up from -7.1 points in January. However, the value remains in the negative territory for nearly two years. “The export industry is lacking in dynamism and optimism” said Klaus Wohlrabe, head of Ifo surveys. “Domestic companies are still waiting for an increase in foreign demand.”

Only a few industries expect a rise in foreign sales. These include the furniture and beverage industries, as well as manufacturers of electrical equipment, who are cautiously optimistic about the next three months. The automotive sector has seen a significant brightening of export prospects, although they still remain in the negative. The machinery and chemical industries also expect a slight decline in foreign sales, while textile and clothing manufacturers are pessimistic about their export business.
