German Employment Steady in July 2025

Germany’s employment figures for July 2025 demonstrate a period of relative stability, according to preliminary calculations from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Approximately 45.8 million people were employed across the country, a figure that remained almost unchanged from the previous month, increasing by just 4,000 individuals when adjusted for seasonal variations. This follows declines in employment of 17,000 and 19,000 in May and June 2025 respectively.

Looking at unadjusted figures, employment decreased by 44,000 (-0.1 percent) between June and July 2025, mirroring a similar reduction observed in the average for July between 2022 and 2024, which saw a decrease of 49,000 (-0.1 percent).

Year-on-year comparisons reveal a continued stabilization, with employment in July 2025 remaining virtually unchanged from July 2024, increasing by only 1,000 individuals (0.0 percent). This marks the third consecutive month where employment has remained consistent with the previous year’s figures.

However, the unemployment rate experienced an increase. In July 2025, 1.74 million people were registered as unemployed, a rise of 149,000 (9.4 percent) compared to July 2024. Consequently, the unemployment rate climbed to 3.9 percent, representing an increase of 0.3 percentage points year-on-year (July 2024: 3.6 percent).

After accounting for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed individuals totaled 1.64 million in July 2025, a minimal increase of 1,000 (+0.1 percent) compared to June. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained stable at 3.7 percent, according to Destatis.
