The German Oscar contender, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, is still in the running for the best international film award. The film, along with “I’m Still Here”, “The Girl with the Needle”, “Emilia Pérez”, and “Flow”, was nominated by the Academy.
German composer and pianist Volker Bertelmann, who wrote the film score for “Konklave”, is also a contender for the award. His work is in competition with the film scores of “Der Brutalist”, “Emilia Pérez”, “Wicked”, and “The Wild Robot”.
Regisseur Edward Berger, born in Germany and associated with the country, will not be in the running for the directing Oscar this year, as “Konklave” did not receive a nomination. The nominees in this category are “Anora”, “Der Brutalist”, “Like A Complete Unknown”, “Emilia Pérez”, and “The Substance”.
Hansjörg Weißbrich will also not be in the running for the editing Oscar, as “September 5” was not nominated, and the nominees in this category are “Anora”, “Der Brutalist”, “Konclave”, “Emilia Pérez”, and “Wicked”.
In total, “Emilia Pérez” received 13 nominations, followed by “Der Brutalist” and the film musical “Wicked”, each with 10 nominations. The nominations were initially scheduled to be announced on January 17, but the date was postponed twice due to the fires in LA.
The Iranian film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, tells the story of a judge at the Iranian Revolutionary Court, who is forced to sign death sentences without scrutiny, amidst the ongoing political protests since autumn 2022. The film combines fictional scenes with real footage of the bloody suppression of the protests by Iranian authorities.
