Police Officer Dies in Car Chase Afternoon Accident in Germany
A police officer was fatally struck by a car in a high-speed chase in the German state of Brandenburg, near the border with Saxony, on Wednesday afternoon. The officer, a member of the Saxon police force, was attempting to control a suspicious vehicle as part of a cross-border manhunt for car thieves, according to authorities.
The fatal collision occurred around midday, and the officer was pronounced dead at the scene, despite efforts to save him and the use of a rescue helicopter. The vehicle, driven by a suspect, allegedly sped up and crashed into the officer, who was standing in the road, a police spokesperson said.
The incident was part of a joint operation between police forces in Saxony and Brandenburg to combat car theft, and a helicopter was also deployed in the pursuit. Three suspects were taken into custody, pending further identification, and experts from the DEKRA organization have been called in to reconstruct the events of the accident.
The investigation is ongoing, and the identities of the suspects, believed to be car thieves, have yet to be confirmed, the police spokesperson added.
